My daughter decided that her Beanie Boos Lion, ‘Hero’ needed a make over.  So I’ve made a new t-shirt for him (slightly girlie fabric but never mind!).  The pattern should also fit other medium size Beanie Boos that are in the same ‘sitting’ position (e.g. Tasha, Safari, Maddie etc).  I used a girls skirt from a charity shop for the fabric.

If you haven’t sewn with jersey before, this is a good size to practice on!  There are some good tips on different websites – I used the Tilly and the Buttons tips when I started experimenting with jersey (not that long ago).   I do have a ‘walking foot’ for my machine which does make a difference, and I use ball point needles.   I used a long zig-zag stitch for all of the t-shirt.

You will need:

  • 14″ x 15″ jersey fabric
  • matching thread

Print the beanie_boo_pattern onto A4 paper.   Cut out the pieces and place on your fabric. Make sure the fabric is stretching in the right direction using the arrows.  Cut two sleeves and one back and front piece.  Then cut a length of fabric for the neckline 1 1/4″ x 12″ (stretch going along the length).

Sewing together:

Sew the top front to the back at the shoulder seams, right sides together.

Press the long strip for the neckline in half lengthways.  Pin the folded strip to the right  side of the top so it fits around the neck with raw edges matching.  Trim any excess if necessary and overlap the ends.   Sew around close to the raw edge (not the folded edge).

Press the raw edges to the inside  so your neckline looks like this:

Press the straight edge of each sleeve up by about 1/4″ and sew along the edge to form a hem.

With right sides together, pin the first sleeve to the top.

Sew close the edge, being careful not to snag the underneath layer.  Go slowly as it’s fiddly.

Repeat with the other sleeve.

Pin the side seams together, right sides together, and sew from underneath the sleeve to the bottom of the t-shirt.   Repeat with the other seam.

Press a small hem at the bottom of the t-shirt and sew all around to finish!
